Hamburg’s Renewable Energy Cluster (EEHH) is growing fast in the city’s European Green Capital year and recently welcomed the hundredth member of its supporters’ club, the Association for the Promotion of the Hamburg Renewable Energy Cluster. It was founded at the end of September 2010 by 57 business enterprises and scientific institutions. The aim of the initiative is to improve networking in the fast-growing renewable energies industry in the Hamburg metropolitan region and to support companies and institutes as they grow and innovate. Its hundredth member, Pfannenberg GmbH, is a company based in Hamburg that specialises in electrical switchgear also used for renewable energies.

Michael Westhagemann, CEO of Siemens AG Region Hanse and Chairman of the Association for the Promotion of the Hamburg Renewable Energy Cluster (EEHH e.V.), is delighted. “We are pleased with our network’s extraordinarily swift growth,” he said. “It proves that Hamburg is a highly interesting location for renewable energies. The swift growth also shows that local firms feel the need for a network structure. In the years ahead we aim to promote Hamburg even more so that it can develop into a top international location for the renewable energies industry.”

Pfannenberg GmbH, based in Hamburg-Allermöhe, specialises in components and system solutions for switch cabinet air conditioning, in optical and acoustic warning and emergency signals and in customer-specific solutions in the product development sector. Managing Director Andreas Pfannenberg says, “We joined because our renewable energies business is growing fast and we want to support an effective network of companies in the Hamburg metropolitan region. Given the international growth of renewable energies we also anticipate that Hamburg’s international presence with a cluster agency will provide us with better market opportunities.”

Jan Rispens, Managing Director of Erneuerbare Energien Hamburg Clusteragentur GmbH (EEHH GmbH), comments: “The renewable energies industry has a strong presence in Hamburg and has in recent years already given the city important growth stimuli. We see for the years to come further growth potential for the industry – from specialised shipbuilding for offshore wind farms, logistics concepts, engineering and certification to specialist service providers. Hamburg’s renewable energies cluster is really gaining momentum in the year of the European Green Capital 2011.” EEHH GmbH was founded in January 2011. Its shareholders are the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, with 51%, and the association, EEHH e.V., with 49%.

Other new members include Heinkel Engineering GmbH & Co. KG, a Hamburg-based specialist engineering office, Deutsche Kreditbank AG, Schwerin, an important financier of wind and solar power projects, and the Lüchow-Dannenberg Academy of Renewable Energies, which offers in cooperation with the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences a highly successful two-year master’s degree course in renewable energies along with specialist and certificate courses. The focus of the new cluster is on strengthening the Hamburg metropolitan region’s profile as an attractive international location for companies in the industry. The existing 100 members include six manufacturers of wind power plants, many financial and insurance service providers, project development companies for wind farms and solar parks, a considerable number of specialist engineering offices and many service providers.

Several hundred larger and smaller companies and service providers are active in the renewable energies sector in the Hamburg metropolitan region. The 25 largest in Hamburg employ between 3,000 and 4,000 people in the renewable energies sector. Companies with their head office in Hamburg earn estimated combined sales of about five billion euros from the renewable energies business.
