TÜV NORD certifies world’s largest offshore wind turbine

Mingyang Smart Energy has asked TÜV NORD to certify MySE18.X-260, currently the world’s most powerful offshore wind turbine. The partners signed the type approval contract today at China Wind Power in Beijing. This certification complies with the internationally valid IECRE OD-501 standard and includes the Rotor Nacelle Assembly (RNA), i.e. rotor blades, hub and nacelle. “With this new design, Mingyang is setting standards for nominal capacity and rotor diameter on the international market. We look forward to working with Mingyang on this challenging project,” says Alexander Ohff, Head of Renewable Energies at TÜV NORD. The turbine has been developed for the international market and boasts a particularly high output of 18.X megawatts and a rotor diameter of 260 metres.

By obtaining type approval, TÜV NORD is verifying that the design and performance of Mingyang’s turbine meet strict international standards and guidelines. This will include a detailed assessment of the technical documentation and an analysis of the structural integrity and mechanical systems, as well as an electrical system review. The turbine’s safety aspects will also be thoroughly examined. At the same time, TÜV NORD will monitor the manufacture of the offshore wind turbine to check whether the production of its main components and the final assembly of the hub and nacelle comply with design requirements and are ready for mass production. The aim of the type approval is to ensure the reliability, safety and efficiency of the wind turbine.
