“Ready for take-off – the global offshore upswing” 17th Hamburg Offshore Wind Conference

The offshore wind industry is enjoying ever greater success worldwide – and German companies are increasingly discovering markets in Asia as well as North and South America. Industry representatives stress the importance of offshore as a dependable pillar of an energy system that is increasingly dependent on renewables. The slogan of the 17th Hamburg Offshore Wind Conference (HOW) at the Empire Riverside Hotel on 7 and 8 April 2020, jointly organised by DNV GL and the Renewable Energy Hamburg cluster agency, is: ‘Ready for take-off – the global offshore upswing’.

“Since 1991, Siemens Gamesa has played a crucial role in developing the offshore wind industry, for example, by helping to build the world’s first offshore wind farm. Back then, a project had a capacity of only 4.95 MW – today it’s several gigawatts. The industry has undergone enormous development globally. Driven by safety improvements, technological achievements and cost reductions, the offshore wind industry has expanded further into other regions beyond its core base in Northwestern Europe. Wind turbines are constantly growing, both in terms of size and power output, and tender prices in the new markets of the Asia-Pacific region and the US are already at a similar level to that in Europe. Offshore wind can leverage the financial advantages of renewable energy sources, together with the social requirements and political support for them, to help us combat climate change together,” says Andreas Nauen, CEO of Offshore Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy.

At the political podium discussion, Kerstin Andrae, BDEW, Lutz Bandusch, Arcelor Mittal/Industrieverband Nord e.V., Gunnar Groebler, Senior Vice President, Head of Business Area Wind, Vattenfall, Professor Hermann Held, Research Unit Sustainability and Global Change at the University of Hamburg, and Professor Claudia Kemfert, DIW Berlin, will be talking with moderator Daniel Münter. In addition, the conference programme includes a dialogue on the upcoming transition facing some wind farms from a high remuneration level of the acceleration model to a lower one, a session on German companies’ business cases in the international arena – especially in Asia – presentations on lucrative combinations of offshore and hydrogen, as well as the presentation of the second Offshore Innovation Awards.
