Offshore wind in the Hamburg city region
Offshore wind industry in Hamburg
With many active members in offshore wind industry and as an advisory board member of the “Stiftung Offshore-Windenergie” (Offshore Wind Energy Foundation), Renewable Energy Hamburg (REH) chose offshore wind as one of the top priorities since its very beginning. The wide-ranging competences of REH’s members cover different stages of the value chain of the offshore wind industry, e.g. manufacturer Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, project developers Orsted, Vattenfall and RWE, and certifiers DNV and TÜV Nord. Research institutions such as the TU Hamburg are producing optimal groundwork in the area of offshore; scientists at CEN (Centre for Earth System Research and Sustainability) at the University of Hamburg are researching the impact of offshore wind farms on micro-climates. The “Hamburg Offshore Wind Conference” which is jointly presented with DNV is a flagship industry event in Northern Germany. Furthermore, Hamburg is home to the world-leading trade fair for wind energy “WindEnergy Hamburg” which takes place bi-annually.
Hamburg: Germany’s Offshore Wind Capital
Offshore projects such as Arkona, Dan Tysk, Global Tech I, Gode Wind I to III, Sandbank and Kaskasi were managed and developed from Hamburg. Overall, the groundwork for approx. 65 per cent of all German offshore projects has been done from the city. As of end of 2022, 28 wind farms with a total of 1,539 wind turbines are in operation in the German waters of the North and Baltic Seas. The overall installed capacity amounts to 8,100 MW. According to a recent study by the institute wind:research, the local offshore wind companies achieved a turnover of 1,87 billion Euros, making Hamburg top of all 16 German federal states.
