The HafenCity University Hamburg – the University of the Built Environment and Metropolitan Development – was founded in 2006 by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in order to combine the academic areas in the city which specialised in planning and construction as academic fields of study and research. Experts from the fields of architecture, engineering, planning, the humanities and social sciences teach and conduct research together at this small, young university to develop sustainable solutions to meet the current and future challenges facing the city. The HCU currently has around 2,000 students.
