International Webinar "Renewables in South Africa"
Within the framework of the EU-program "International City Partnerships", Hamburg and Cape Town collaborates on renewables among other topics. During the first mutual visits, both sides identified various aspects of common interest, from energy infrastructure, energy generation to workforce. To this end, REH wants to support the South African business partners with the help of its members who have the approciate competences. REH’s members Nordex and ENERTRAG have been present in the region for many years, are nowadays market leaders.
Today, the energy production in South Africa is still highly relied on coal, which accounts for 75% of the entire power mix. Since more than a decade, South Africa has been undergoing an energy crisis which is caused by outdated power stations, energy grid and political mismanagement. To address the issue and gradually secure the energy supply, both national government and large cities such as Cape Town have implemented a series of measures which faciliate private investors to build small-scale and decentralized power generation with renewable sources (mainly solar and wind). This provides foreign businesses, especially German companies, with opportunities to export their knowledge and technologies. In turn, the build-out of renewables in South Africa can benefit Germany’s ambition for ramp-up of the hydrogen economy.
The online seminar aims to provide a general overview of renewables in Southern African countries (mainly South Africa), introduce current policy, investment and business opportunities in South Africa using Cape Town as an example and share first-hand experiences and opinions from German companies.
