Forum International Business: Energy island Bornholm – Strengthening European Cooperation in Offshore Wind

At the North Sea Summit Hamburg 2026, Germany and Denmark signed an investment agreement to jointly develop the Baltic Sea island of Bornholm into an international electricity hub.

Bornholm is set to become an energy island, connecting electricity generated by three planned offshore wind farms and transmitting it via subsea cables to Germany and Denmark. The project is being jointly developed by German transmission system operator 50Hertz and its Danish counterpart, Energinet, with completion targeted for 2034. In its first phase, approximately 3 GW of offshore wind capacity will be connected to the grid.

Bornholm Energy Island could play a strategically important role in Europe’s offshore wind expansion. By combining offshore wind generation with cross-border electricity infrastructure, the project represents a shift from nationally focused energy projects toward a more interconnected European energy system.

Turning this vision into reality will require close collaboration across the entire value chain—from regulators and transmission system operators to project developers, wind farm operators, and suppliers.

The Bornholm project offers an opportunity to look beyond individual wind farms and explore what it takes to build the interconnected energy infrastructure Europe will need for the future.
