Wind power in Hamburg metropolitan region
In mid-2012, the number of wind turbines with an overall capacity of around 30 GW installed in Germany totalled almost 23,000. Experts predict large growth potential for wind power. According to the World Wind Energy Association, the capacity installed worldwide in 2010 of around 100 GW will increase to 1,000 GW within ten years.
The Hamburg city region between the Baltic and the North Sea, with its good wind conditions, is an ideal location for wind turbines – both onshore and offshore. Large, internationally operating manufacturers such as Areva Wind, Gamesa, General Electric, Nordex, REpower Systems, Siemens and Vestas have moved their company headquarters or important skills centres here. However, there are also a large number of small and medium-sized manufacturers and service companies. From 2014, Hamburg will host the new international trade fair, Hamburg WindEnergy.
